Families Sue East LA Regional Center

Seven families are now suing the East LA Regional Center in order to have services protected from budget cuts. Public Counsel -- a large pro bono firm along with a private firm -- are suing to keep DIR in place for their children. DIR stands for Developmental Individual Difference Relationship based Treatment. Apparently these families are arguing that DIR is an essential service for their children and rather than try to appeal, they have opted to go to court to protect funding for DIR. This is a very different approach to problem solving funding cuts. Instead of having the Regional Center direct the appeals process, these families will be heard by a real judicial officer. This is a far better forum to establish their case and could prove helpful to 100's of other families trying to preserve funding for their children. Let's all watch this case and see if it proves to create a precedent for contesting funding cuts.
