Parent training increases benefits of medication

Researchers from Ohio State, Indiana University, University of Pittsburgh, Yale, and NIMH have concluded that intensive parent training improved behavior in children with ASD. The study compared medication only group with a group with meds and parent training and the latter group showed greater impovement in self management and flexible/compliant behavior. This certainly is not a surprise to those of us who work with parents, but it is always good to know that research supports the combination of meds and parent training. At GroupWorks West parents are involved in training as part of our social development groups. Parents meet for 90 minutes every 4 weeks to discuss group and monitor behavior at home and school. Parent training is the most cost effective treatment available to families challenged by raising a child or teen with ASD.
